Canada AM said “Babe’s voice is as appealing as her name is unique”. One of the best-selling Indie recording artists around, her music has been described as honest, rootsy and real, fitting powerful stories to thoughtful music with craftswomanlike precision. The Vancouver based singer, songwriter and guitarist has drawn comparisons to such diverse talents as Lucinda Williams, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow and Chrissie Hynde but this is one diamond who shines with her own kind of light. Babe has opened for Amanada Marshall, J. Gaines & The Soul Attorneys, Cowboy Junkies,Colin Hay, Men At Work), Barney Bentall and the Grapes of Wrath and her fourth release “Back Alley Porch” is garnering critical acclaim. A recent 5 star review said; “A Gem – Babe’s melodies are captivating and one of “those” voices… Another Canadian winner!! (James Williams, New Zealand). www.babegurr.com
Upon returning from gigs in Europe, this Island artist was thrilled to learn that she had just been nominated for five Vancouver Island Music Awards. Andrea is gaining international interest and recognition, not only for her songwriting but for her skillful rendering of her material in performance. In 2005 she took home first place in the Shuswap Lake International Writer’s Festival Songwriting Competition, her future looks bright indeed.
Her latest release “Sweet Embrace” features players such as Miles Black, Pat Coleman, Pat Steward, Phil Dwyer, Ken Lister, Dave Gogo, Todd Sacerty and Rick Salt. With such a stellar lineup it’s not surprising that Smith is receiving positive reviews from local, provincial and international critics alike. www.andreasmith.ca
Here’s what they’re saying about “Sweet Embrace”
V.I.’s Smith has a fine expressive voice, can write solid, accessible material and has surrounded herself with great players. Radio will go nuts trying to categorize her but this is good stuff. John P. McLaughlin – The Province, Tue, Feb 6th, 2007
If Nanaimo was the American South and it was summer instead of winter, you’d expect to hear music like that found on Andrea Smith’s album “Sweet Embrace” floating out of bars and clubs as you walk by. It’s comforting and intimate. From one track to another, Smith swings from primarily jazz to blues to folk and back, lending a refreshing note of variety to the album.
