August at Rhizome

Café * Arts Venue * Community Space

317 East Broadway

Dear friends of Rhizome-

Happy summer to you all!  Here are a couple of announcements, as well as the listings for upcoming events in August (and a few September ones too.)

Rhizome Café Turns Two:  Anniversary Party in September

As of June, Rhizome Café is now officially two years old!  Mark your calendars for the evening of Saturday, September 27, and join us to celebrate these two years of community and activism, arts and culture, good food and friendship.  The details are listed below.

There’s Still Time to Help Design a Rhizome Café T-shirt

We’re still accepting submissions of drawings and ideas for our collaborative t-shirt design process.  Here’s how it works:  By August 5th, email or drop off a sketch of an image you think represents Rhizome.  If you don’t want to draw, you can describe an image in words.  We will pass your drawings on to an artist who has recently shown her work at Rhizome.  She will compile elements of everyone’s images, add her own two cents, and produce a t-shirt design that represent the visual ideas of many people.  The t-shirts will be unveiled (and available for sale) at Rhizome’s second anniversary party on September 27.  You may or may not recognize elements of your work in the final designs, but you can rest assured that your drawing will have influenced these t-shirts—created rhizomatically!  Again, the deadline for submissions is August 5.

Family Sundays Begin Again in September

During the school year, Rhizome holds a series of wonderful kids’ activities on Sunday afternoons.  Right now, we’re planning our schedule for the fall, and are looking for musicians, storytellers and other performers who are interested in sharing your talents with kids.  Also—we’re looking for kids who perform for other kids, and kids who want to organize their own events.  Get in touch with us if you’re interested!

We hope you’ll join us for the various events listed below.  Also, remember that we’re open for delicious lunch, dinner, weekend brunch, snacks and drinks.  Our complete hours are listed at the end of this message.  And let us know if you’d like to use our Community Meeting Room for your group’s activities.  You can check our website for more information on what we do and how we do it: www.rhizomecafe.ca.

Here’s what’s happening in the coming month:

Art on our Walls

Liaison: Paintings by Dzee Louise

Dzee Louise examines how experience materializes in the body and how the body informs our experience. Textures imply systems of veins, nerves or roots.  Patterns are repeated and become the connective tissue across a number of realms.  Abstracted figures interact with and are revealed in the patterns, suggesting occurrences at the biological, environmental and sociological levels.  Save the date for the Liaison closing party: Thursday, September 25.

A note on our name:

In the botanical sense, a rhizome is a root system that some plants (like lilies and orchids and ginger and bamboo) use to spread themselves about.  While the roots of most plants point generally downward, the rhizome is a horizontal root system that runs parallel to the surface of the ground.  The plant sends shoots up from nodes in the rhizome, creating what look like many separate plants.  These seemingly unrelated individuals are actually all connected, through a system that’s not immediately visible to the eye.
