If comedy is an equal-opportunity offender, Margaret Cho is one of its most democratic, and cutting, practitioners. The Bay Area comedian first came to national attention in the mid-’90s when she became the first Korean-American woman with her own sitcom, All-American Girl. When the network cancelled the show, Margaret took what could have been a major career setback and used it to hone her stand-up act with I’m the One That I Want, a show that was both empowering and hysterically funny. Subsequent tours like Notorious C.H.O., Revolution, the politically charged, Bush-skewering State of Emergency, and Assassin, along with more concert films, further solidified a tremendous fanbase that cuts across gender, orientation, and racial lines. Beautiful, her latest tour, marks Margaret’s first stand-up tour since 2005.
With her biting wit and fearlessness, Margaret has become one of the most successful comedians working today—and all on her own terms. Thanks to her outspokenness, she is also the recipient of numerous awards, including Best Comedy Performance Award at the 2007 Asian Excellence Awards, a First Amendment Award from ACLU, an Intrepid Award from the National Organization for Women. GLAAD, American Women in Radio and Television, and many more organizations have honoured this remarkable performer.
