Plan V – intersectional, fun and fab

A group of women from the local lesbian meetup attended last Saturday’s showing of Plan V at the Vancouver Fringe festival. Consensus afterward (because what is a group of lesbians without consensus) was that we loved it.
The first thing I was surprised about was that there were men there, who I am assuming from their reactions were every bit as keen on the V as our group. I kept my eye on one in the front row during the show, noting the surprise and revelation of the content on his face. The kinds of conversations and jokes from the performance are ones I am only familiar with in women’s queer community or feminist communities, but O’Brien’s show makes it accessible to straights (and in fact may be primarily for straights) without alienating the sapphics. Not an easy task.
The premise is that this is a kind of V-worshipping tent revival held in 2035, when people have a better attitude about women’s and other vagina-having bodies. It combines a large range of characters, male, female and nonbinary speaking about their own experiences with the ‘Plan V’ organization. Once the stage is set, an ‘ovamony’ is given by a straight woman character who hilariously enacts her journey from not knowing much about ‘down there’ to being worshipped by a guy with a “panty-dropping Scottish accent”, and telling him exactly what she wants. The cast of characters from elderly straight guy with ED to new age yoni enthusiasts to a lovely southern housewife turned queer Plan V team leader in a pink velour tracksuit is fun and refreshing, and O’Brien uses the idea of zoom webinars to help move back and forth between them without the need for a lot of costume changes.
Well worth a watch. Hilarious and empowering. Lots of fun crowd participation invitation without being intrusive. Go see it with your friends now while you can. Even better, see it with your lover of whatever gender, it’d be a great way to open up juicy discussion about what you both love about the V. Note, the venue is tiny so tickets are likely to sell out. We had a nice full room.
Tickets are a very reasonable $20 , and here are the upcoming showings:
