A hopeful story of time-travelling lesbians, quantum entanglement and goats…

Your own LQ editor, Sophia Kelly, has released a new book. It’s called People of the Rock. I wrote it between 2010 and 2019, well before the pandemic, but it has so many themes that respond to the time of the pandemic and following. It’s a (sometimes spicy) love story, and it’s also about how do we hope, how do we look ahead and see that things can and could get better, a lot better.

It’s about the interconnections between queer family, it’s about practical ecological sustainability, it’s about what happens when we run out of oil, it’s about breakups and learning to love again and about doing the hard, right, thing. It’s about the quantum entanglement of love, that can even pass through time. It’s about feeling safe again after a tragedy and about how it is to trust in love.

I love what this book says. I hope you will read it. I am indie publishing it, and would love it if you would buy a copy or spread the word, or even just sign up for my mailing list to be informed of the next few books coming out. I have one ready to release later this year, and another one in progress.

Here’s the official blurb:

In this hopeful queer time-travelling love story, Lucy is destined to save the whole world – okay, Vancouver – from the apocalypse. But does she really have to leave the love of her life to do it? And what’s with all the goats?

Lucy’s ex-girlfriend is missing, her heart is broken, and her shoes are way too slippery when she hits her head and wakes up 500 years in the future. The future, if that’s what it is, is perfect. Vancouver is an eco-paradise, complete with renewable energy, a gift economy, and a smart, hot historian with a big secret. Lucy’s ex is not so lucky.

However, back in the present, her gay best friend is about to be arrested for her murder, and the ancestors of people she now loves will never be born. Will Lucy stay with her true love in paradise or lose everything to save them all?

If you’ve ever worried about how we could possibly thrive after everything the world is throwing at us from pandemics to climate change, this is for you. Sprinkled with nerdy nuggets of seismology, quantum entanglement, and temporal uncertainty for extra seasoning. But goats eat everything, right?
